Throwback: When Burger Records Celebrated Its Tenth Anniversary

Burger Records Orange County, Fullerton

In 2009, Lee Rickard and Sean Bohrman opened Burger Records as a music store in Orange County’s Fullerton city. The founders had a hairstyle in 2019 that was identical to what they had all those years ago. The year 2019 marked the tenth anniversary of this record store. As Bohrman and Rickard started it with mainly vinyl records and cassette tapes, even the one who installed the internet connection for the store predicted that it would fail. However, it achieved what many felt would be impossible at the time.

Nevertheless, there was some precedent. In 2007, following a dinner with upcoming band Audacity’s members, Bohrman and Rickard started their label Burger Records and chose to release cassette music. They chose Burger Records as the name for their record label as eating was their favorite hobby apart from music. Rickard stated that he and Bohrman loved burger, just like the members of their band entitled ‘Thee Makeout Party’. So, the duo thought about it, as well as the Beatles’ association with Apple Records, when they used B as the first letter of their record label’s name.

Then, in 2009, the duo and Brian Flores opened a shop that would later be devoted to their bands and other people. At the start itself, the owners decided that they would sell music on vinyl and cassette-type instead of compact discs. Rickard attributed the move to a lack of CDs in their collection rather than a dislike for CD music. However, the store owners developed a big CD collection over time. They made a greater number of CDs over the last decade than they did at the start. Nevertheless, the store owners loved music in every format.

Burger Records in Fullerton celebrated the anniversary with a sale of used and new records, real-time performances from Blivet and This Uni, and a burger food truck. For your information, Blivet and This Uni are music bands from Orange County.

Back when Burger Records was opened, Bohrman used an upstairs space of the store to sleep, whereas Rickard slept on a sales area sofa. They were not sleeping at the workplace in 2019, but the two expected to be more stable over the next decade. One of the popular products that Burger Records used to sell was an album from Dee Dee Ramone entitled ‘Standing in the Spotlight’. While many people thought that Dee Dee Ramone was a girl, it was not the case. So, when Bohrman found a kitten standing on the shelves of the album area in the store, he monikered its creator as Dee Dee King.

In 2019, Rickard stated that the duo had been changing their thinking over the past few years, as they were selfless for more than a decade. Nevertheless, they wanted a better standard of health, comfort and happiness. Back then, the two were aged around 40 years, and they used to do the same stuff as in their teenage years.
